Single-gender school program praised

March 11, 2008

Dorchester District 2's Beech Hill Elementary School was recognized Saturday by state Superintendent of Education Jim Rex for its success in creating a single-gender education program.

Beech Hill, which has offered separate classes for boys and girls as an option for three years, was one of seven schools across the state that Rex honored. Led by Principal Babette Hamilton, the Summerville school's program uses data, gathers input from parents through surveys and extends additional opportunities for parents to discuss gender differences through studies.

Rex has pushed single-gender classes as an innovative public school choice. Roughly 90 schools offer the option, and an additional 100 schools are expected to do so next school year.
