District Open Enrollment
What is it?
District open enrollment affords parents the opportunity to enroll their child in any public school in a district, regardless of assigned attendance zones. To address overcrowding, some out-of-zone enrollment limits may apply.
What is different?
Most districts require that parents enrolling their child in a school outside of their assigned attendance zone provide transportation both to and from school. Other attendance parameters may also be established by the district.
What are the possible benefits?
Parents can enroll their child in the school best suited for their learning and/or behavioral needs.
When did it become state or national law?
Currently there is no specific South Carolina legislation mandating district open enrollment. Local school board sanctioning, however, may be required.
