Schools-within-Schools

What is it?

Schools-within-schools offer students the chance to participate in a unique structure that operates on the campus of a larger established public school. Common campus facilities, such as the school library, cafeteria, and gym, may be shared with the host school. All courses taught in this structure are aligned to the South Carolina academic standards.

What is different?

Schools-within-schools often have their own administrative and instructional staff, follow a specialized curriculum, and offer smaller class sizes.

What are the possible benefits?

  • Increased academic achievement
  • Increased opportunities for parent participation
  • Small class size
  • Smaller administrative and instructional staff
  • Curriculum flexibility based on school design
  • Experiential learning

When did it become state or national law?

There is no specific South Carolina legislation mandating Schools-within-Schools. Local school board sanctioning, however, may be required.
