Briefing Guide for Educators

Structure Description

Schools-within-schools offer public school parents and students unique programs that operate on campuses of larger established public schools.  A smaller educational unit is created within an existing school, retains its own administrators and faculty, and may use its own specialized curriculum.  However, regardless of curricular focus, all courses offered are aligned to the South Carolina academic standards.  Most school-within-school programs cater to either a specific grade level, gender, career interest, or behavioral need.

Management Issues/Challenges

The building principal retains the responsibility for safety and building operations.  Common areas may be shared by the established school and the smaller unit. For instance, students may share use of the library, gym, and school nurse.

Anticipated Student Costs

Professional development, instructional resources, and student incentives are funding concerns for program implementation and program development.

Transportation

In most cases, students not zoned for the school are responsible for their own transportation. Contact your district for information regarding schools-within-schools.
