- Program Description
- The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous, comprehensive liberal arts course of studies. The IB Organizations developed the Diploma Programme as a pre-college/university programme. It is only offered to juniors and seniors during their last two years of school. An IB Diploma candidate is required to take one of each of the six study groups represented on the IB Hexagon. These groups include Language A1; Language B; Individuals & Societies; Experimental Sciences; Mathematics; and Fine Arts/Electives. This is inclusive of a second language students are to become fluent speakers of. In addition, diploma candidates are required to complete an independent research essay of 3,500 - 4,000 words normally based on a topic from one of the students IB subject areas. This essay must be completed under the direct supervision of a teacher at the school who is familiar with the Diploma Programme. Students are expected to devote approximately 40 hours of work towards this project. They are also required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of a Theory of Knowledge class and 150 hours with an extracurricular project called CAS (Creativity, Action, Service). Both internal and external assessments are administered; with IBO examiners grading external exams. Courses are offered at SL and HL levels; standard and higher levels respectively. Of the six required subjects, students must have a minimum of three HL classes and not more than four at that level. Students desiring to take a course or two but not desrious of the entire curriculum will have the opportunity to do so. The more students exposed to this advanced course of study and positive attitude about learning the better the school's overall culture.
- Program Mission/Goals
- The mission of Latta High School is to provide the curriculum, facilities, personnel, and safe environment so that each student is given the opportunity to develop to his/her fullest potential in order to become an internationally minded, productive, self-reliant member of the work force, and an integral, contributing part of a global society.
- Area of Academic or Career Focus
- With the IB Diploma Programme being developed as a pre-college/university programme the main focus is getting students prepared academically for the next level of life beyond high school. At this stage the the students' life there has been much focus on a career of choice. Therefore, it is our desire that the Individual Graduation Plan along with the course offerings of the IB Programme will aid in the ultimate couse of study for the students. Students will be encouraged to have a positive attitude towards learning and constantly admonished to ask challenging questions, reflect critically, develop research skills, and learn how to learn. End results being students feeling prepared to compete on a global basis.
- Evidence of Program Success Stories
- The implementation of this programme will begin August 2010. As a result, there is no achievement data to report at this time. However, as the programme begins there will be awards and recognitions given to both students and faculty members at the appropriate time. It is our hope that the entire school and our community benefit from this challenging endeavor.
